The tundra across the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, USA is beautiful when adorned in its Fall hues, even moreso when the wildlife makes an appearance. A large muskox is surrounded by the fall colors where he munches on the the willow, but the early signs of winter approach as snow begins to fall from above.
The muskox is a very large animal with long hair which thickens during the fall preparing the animal for the cold winter months in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. A slight shoulder hump and horns are prominent on both sexes except that the horns of the bulls are larger and heavier.
The males grow to about 5 feet in height and weigh between 450-1200 pounds while the females only reach about 4 feet in height and approximately 400-500 pounds. The muskox must be on alert while in the openings of the fall colored tundra of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as Arctic wolves, brown bears and humans are their predators.
While visiting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, fall is one of the prettiest times of year when the tundra is ablaze in color and the wildlife stocks up for the long, cold months ahead.
