The caldera on Mt. Katmai in Alaska, USA has been filled in by water creating a beautiful 3 by 2 mile aqua colored lake with icebergs adorning the surface. The caldera was formed on Mt. Katmai after the 60 hour eruption of Mt. Novarupta in 1912. Research has found that magma drained beneath Mt. Katmai and Mt. Novarupta which aided in the collapse of the summit.
The top edges of the caldera is 6,716 feet high with the floor being about 3,400 feet and in 1975, the lake was measured at an elevation of 4,200 feet. The aerial view of the caldera on Mt. Katmai is beautiful when the icebergs are present and the rugged peaks of the mountains are blanketed with snow.
