Mt. Griggs is a stratovolcano which is very active with hot sulfurous gases in the crater atop the volcano with the hottest ones being in the upper southwest flank. The eruption in 1912 by Novarupta, left the steep slopes of Mt. Griggs in the Valley of 10000 Smokes in Alaska, covered with its fallout.
There has never been an eruption which has been recorded throughout Mt. Grigg's life span, but the noises which can be heard coming from inside which gurgle about constantly, are a sure sign of its activity. The mountain was named after Dr. Robert Fisk Griggs who was a botanist in the area following the 1912 eruption.
