Mt. Griggs or Knife Peak Volcano, is located a short distance from the volcanic arc of the other volcanoes in Katmai National Park in the north margin of the Valley of 10000 Smokes. Mt. Griggs has never reported any major eruptions but active fumaroles still emit gasses in the crater and on the southwest side of the mountain.
An aerial view of this scenic landscape shows the uneven terrain of the mountain ridges with Mt. Griggs being the highest in the park, reaching a height of 7,602 feet. When hiking through Katmai National Park near this volcanic region, one can hear the gases inside this volcano roaring. Mt Griggs is an older volcano which was around before the 1912 eruption of Novarupta and climbers venturing to the peak, should be aware of the icy ridges around the summit.
The aerial view of Mt Griggs is one which is breathtaking, especially on a clear day when the entire volcanic landscape is visible.
