Located in the central Alaska Range in Denali National Park in Alaska, USA, Mt. Foraker stands at 17,400 feet, the second highest in this range of peaks and the sixth highest in North America. While flying above Mt. Foraker at sunset, the aerial view is breathtaking as part of the peak becomes shaded while the other reflects the remaining sunlight.
Mt. Foraker was named in 1899 after Joseph B. Foraker, a US Senator from Ohio by Joseph Herron. The North Peak was first climbed in August of 1934 with the South Peak being conquered by three men 10 days after. It was not until 1977 that two men made the first ascent up Foraker's Infinite Spur, two others in 1988 and a third ascent was done by Barry Blanchard and Carl Tobin in July of 2000. In 2006, two woman attempted fate climbing Mt. Foraker but all signs of them disappeared about 1,000 feet below the summit and they were never found.
The climb up Mt. Foraker is rated as extremely difficult for 9,000 feet towards the summit and most people prefer to enjoy the beauty of Mt. Foraker from above. The aerial view is breathtaking especially during the sunset hours on a fairly clear day.
