A mountain race which takes place every 4th of July in Seward, Alaska is the Mt Marathon Race bringing out crowds of people every year. The entire race is about 3.1 miles long which begins in downtown Seward with the halfway point being atop Mt. Marathon at 3,022 feet.
Since 1915, the mountain race has been an annual event with the top racers usually finishing around the 45 minute mark. Heading up is a slow pace of about 2 miles per hour, but coming down, people are reaching speeds of about 12 miles per hour. Coming out of this race unscathed is not likely, whether they are covered in mud or blood.
