The sunset lighting reflects off the water around Molokini Island in Maalaea Bay off the coast of Maui, Hawaii giving passengers aboard a flight tour a stunning aerial view of this crescent shaped island. Molokini Island is the tip of an inactive underwater volcanic crater that the State of Hawaii declared as a marine life and bird conservation district.
Many tours travel to Molokini, a 2.5 mile trip by boat off the shores of Maui, Hawaii as it has become a popular place to snorkel and scuba dive. Reef sharks, turtles, manta rays and various other species of wild life have made Molokini Island their home where they swim amongst the beautiful colors of coral.
This island was once an active volcano, now extinct and submerged in the ocean that extends from the ocean floor with erosion on one side allowing the water to flow inwards. The walls of the crater are approximately 80 feet deep, the outside walls extend to 350 feet and the visibility in the water is close to 150 feet.
Molokini Island is a highlight for many who visit Maui, Hawaii, whether it includes viewing the crater from above while on a flight tour or while traveling around it on a boat or kayak.
