A wooden shelter provides a incredible view of the Million Dollar Bridge, the Copper River and the mountainous scenery in the Chugach National Forest in Cordova, Alaska. The sign under the shelter welcomes people to the Million Dollar Bridge and has a large display and detailed information about the area and the bridge.
The construction of the Million Dollar Bridge was started in 1908 by the Copper River and Northwestern Railroad Company and in 1958, the bridge was changed to a highway crossing. An earthquake destroyed parts of the bridge in 1964 and a flood in 1995 causing major repairs to be done but has since reopened to vehicles.
Multiple spans make up the truss bridge, a part which totally completed the 196 mile railroad crossing over the Copper River. The Copper River spans a distance of 300 miles and is known for its delta ecosystem and the multiple wild salmon runs.
Today, many visit the Million Dollar Bridge while traveling the Chugach National Forest in Cordova, Alaska.
