The Million Dollar Bridge, aka the Miles Glacier Bridge, near Cordova, Alaska was founded in 1910 costing approximately 1.4 million dollars. An aerial view shows the multiple-spans of the truss bridge crossing the Copper River which completed the 196 mile railroad for the Copper River and Northwestern Railway. The cost of the bridge quickly paid for itself when $200 million dollars worth of copper ore was shipped.
In 1938, the Million Dollar Bridge ceased being a railroad bridge and in 1958 it was used for vehicles. An earthquake in 1964 damaged the bridge and temporary repairs were done in order for the bridge to be satisfactory. In 1995, flooding of the Copper River made the bridge impassable and in 2004, the bridge was repaired properly with completion in 2005.
