A thin layer of clouds blanket the sky over Miles Glacier and Miles Lake at sunset allowing the lighting to reflect off the ice covered landscape. Miles Glacier spans a distance of 48 kilometers in length flowing to its terminus of Miles Lake. Ice floes are usually seen floating across the surface of the lake after they have broken free from the glacier.
Miles Lake is about 5.6 kilometers in length and sits about 53 kilometers from Katalla and the Chugach Mountains where it empties into the Copper River. Sunset is the prettiest time of day to visit Cordova, Alaska when the sky becomes illuminated and the glacier landscape glows.
A lieutenant for the US Army made this area part of his Alaskan expedition and in 1885, the lake and glacier were named after a Major General in the army who went by the name of Nelson A. Miles. Located in the Chugach National Forest in Alaska, USA, the glacier has receded approximately 2 miles since the year of 1910.
