When capturing an aerial view of Miles Glacier in Chugach National Forest near Cordova, Alaska you can see the extent in which the glacier spans. Miles Glacier is 48 kilometers in length and was named in 1885 after an US Army General, Nelson Miles, by a lieutenant after his excursion to Alaska.
Across the surface of Miles Lake, large chunks of ice float about which have broken away from the glacier during its retreat, some which melt during the long summer Alaskan days. Miles Glacier flows west where it finds it terminus at Miles Lake.
