With a piece of food in its mouth, this female McKay's Bunting sits atop of the rocky cliffs of the Pribilof Islands in Alaska, USA. With its snow white colored plumage except for some darker coloring along its back, the McKay's Bunting grows to be about 7" in height.
The main breeding grounds for the McKay's Bunting is on Hall Island and St. Matthew Island in the Bering Sea and sometimes on the Pribilof Islands and St. Lawrence Island. During the winter season, this bird resides along the coast of W. Alaska and Nunivak with some sightings being in the Aleutians and coastal S. Alaska.
The McKay's Bunting is closely related to the Snow Bunting in many of its characteristics, behaviorial traits and the type of food it relies on to survive. There are approximately 6,000 McKay's Bunting left in world, not an immediate threat but that can easily change with rising sea levels and their worst enemies, the rat, weasel or fox.
