Two tourists to Hatcher Pass in the Matanuska Valley in Alaska, USA read the information sign where the Talkeetna Mountains adorn the backdrop near the Independence Gold Mine.
The Independence Mine was separated into two mines until 1938 when two companies joined forces and created one mine where 83 mining claims were underway. In 1941, over 200 men were employed to blast tunnels where there was over 34,000 ounces of gold found. In 1943, the Independence Mine was closed but reopened again three years later which lasted until 1951 when the mine was closed for good.
The Independence Mine State Historical Park now welcomes visitors to explore the area or partake in one of the guided tours.
