A mid-sized song bird is the Northern Cardinal which is easy to recognize with its bright colors and very distinctive crest atop its head. The male and female are easy to tell apart as the mask around their faces are different in color, black on the males and gray on the females. The plumage is crimson red on the male with the back and wings being duller in color while the female is a light brown hue with a red tinge on its wings.
The Northern Cardinal grows to be about 9 inches in length and weigh about 1.6 ounces, the male being slightly larger in size than the female. The beaks on both species are coral colored and in the shape of a cone.
This picture of the Northern Cardinal was taking in Texas Hill Country in Comfort, Texas while he perched himself on top of an aged log. This bird is commonly seen around residential areas and many people attract them by using sunflower seeds in a bird feeder.
