Clouds have blocked out most of the sunlight on this particular day in the Chugach National Forest in Cordova, Alaska, but the stillness of the water in Orca Inlet, the colorful wildflowers and the snow capped mountains, create a picturesque scene. The pink and purple hues explode from the wildflowers growing freely along the coastal shores, some of which grow close to 5 feet in height.
Orca Inlet is situated on the eastern shores of Prince William Sound, 2 miles north of Cordova, Alaska where it is surrounded by glacier carved mountains, wetlands, lush forests and wildflowers. The inlet serves as a waterway to Prince William Sound from the Gulf of Alaska and was originally named Puerto Cordova by a Spanish explorer in 1790. The name of the inlet was changed to Orca Inlet in the 1900's and it is one of the most stunning places in the Chugach National Forest to explore and experience the true outdoor wilderness of Cordova, Alaska.
Spring and summer are the prettiest times of year to visit Cordova, Alaska when the wildflowers are blossoming and the snow lingers atop the mountains. Fishing and logging are the main sources of income for the town of Cordova but with the frequent sightings of Orca passing through the inlet, tourism has increased.
