A lonely Brown Bear stands atop the rocks near the water's edge on the Alaska Peninsula in the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge as he scopes out the area for a meal of either sockeye, chum, coho or pink salmon. In the backdrop, the lush greenery climbs up the hillsides during the warmer weather.
The Izembek National Wildlife Refuge is filled with an abundance of wildlife such as caribou, wolves, red fox, otters, minks, wolverines, brown bears and a large variety of land birds. In the coastal waters, Stellar sea lions, harbour seals, otters, gray whales, killer whales, minke whales and various seabirds can often be observed from the shores.
The Izembek National Wildlife Refuge is fairly difficult to reach as one must fly in or by marine ferry Alaska Marine Highway System as there are no roads in from Anchorage. The land and waters are open to visitors all year, but one must always be alert as wildlife could be roaming free anywhere throughout the refuge.
