The Loggerhead Shrike is a beautiful little bird and scientists are finding that this species is dropping in number, increasing the risk of it becoming extinct. As we walked by this bird perching on a twig, it remained motionless offering the picture perfect opportunity.
Growing to about the size of a robin, this bird is an extremely good hunter finding insects and small animals as a food source. Very detailed markings can be seen on the Loggerhead Shrike, a type of bird where there are 11 subspecies, all fairly similar in their looks.
A small black mask around the eyes and the forehead are a prominent feature on this bird which takes away from the heavy, hooked beak. Their favorite places for perching is on utility wires, fence posts, twigs or dead branches at the top of large trees where it will sing in various ranges during the spring courtship.
Once a very popular bird across Canada, the Loggerhead Shrike has now disappeared from New Brunswick, Quebec and is declining in many places of Ontario and Manitoba. They often leave Canada and migrate to southern locations in the U.S. for the winter, sometimes reaching Mexico.
