After the last lava flows at Makalua-puna Point on West Maui in Hawaii, USA, these unique rock formations were formed and named the "Dragon's Teeth". The lava in this region is slightly different than around the rest of the island as it is lighter, denser and fine-grained and as the wind swept in over the water, the lava hardened upwards in the shape of dragon's teeth.
As the ocean beat against these rock formations over the years, the salt has whitened the lava and formed holes throughout the Dragon's Teeth. When various forces of nature mix, one never knows what the outcome will be and along this side of the island of Maui, the rock formations have become a popular tourist attraction.
Visitors should scan the shores while visiting the Dragon's Teeth as this area is often frequented by sea turtles. Many divers come to this area to explore the lava rock formations beneath the shores of Maui, Hawaii and swim with the sea turtles.
