Peaceful in his surroundings of the wilderness of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, USA, an older Kodiak Brown Bear takes in the beauty of the blossoming wildflowers. The fur on the bear ranges in color from blond to dark brown with cubs having a white ring around their neck until they reach about two years of age.

A Kodiak bear, also referred to as the Alaskan Brown Bear, is the largest subspecies of the Brown Bear with the male reaching approximately 800 - 1400 pounds and the female being a fair bit smaller weighing between 500 - 700 pounds. When standing upright on its hind legs, a male Kodiak Brown Bear could reach approximately 10 feet in height.

Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge was created to keep the Kodiak Brown Bears, salmon, sea otters, sea lions and other wildlife species safe in a protected environment. Located on an island on the coast of southwestern Alaska in the USA, 1.9 million acres are open for the Kodiak Brown Bear to wander freely. Throughout the refuge, there are about 2,300 brown bears and the only way for humans to view these incredible animals is by commercial airlines from Anchorage, on the Alaska Marine Highway System, charter planes or boats.

Spring and summer are beautiful seasons to visit the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge as the wildflowers, trees and plants are blossoming in color.
