An aerial view of the Knik Glacier in Palmer, Alaska is stunning as the icefields fill the gorge for over 5 miles across and 25 miles in length, one of the largest glaciers in southcentral Alaska. This river of ice is stunning to see as the landscape continuously changes as the flow grinds it way down the mountain slopes.
The area around Palmer, Alaska is surrounded by 10,000 feet mountains, hanging glaciers and waterfalls cascading from heights unknown, beautiful scenery which is only truly appreciated when seen in person. Global warming has made a huge impact on the Knik Glacier especially since 1997 when the glacier appeared to wake from a long nap and show signs of the glacier getting smaller due to the ice melt. A new lake at the face of the glacier has been formed which is over 3 miles long, over 400 feet deep and growing yearly.
The Knik Glacier is situated approximately 50 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska feeding the Knik River which then empties into Cook Inlet. There are various outfits which provide visitors to Palmer, Alaska, an aerial view of the scenery of the Knik Glacier while aboard a flight seeing trip.
