Created from the waters of the Kenai River and the melting of the Skilak Glacier, Skilak Lake reaches a depth of 528 feet and spans 15 miles in length and 1 mile to 4 miles from its narrowest point to its widest. A family to Skilak Lake can fish for Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout, Dolly Varden, Chinook Salmon, Silver Salmon, Sockeye Salmon and Pink Salmon and can launch a boat from two different points on the shores of the lake.

Cabins and two campgrounds border Skilak Lake where one can depart in the early morning hours to explore the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge along the hiking trails.
