The Eskimo people from the village of Kaktovik in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska still partake in whaling which they believe to be an important part of their culture. The Inupiat children from Kaktovik stand beside the massive head of a Bowhead Whale which has been harpooned by the village people.
This 45 foot Bowhead Whale is in the process of being butchered by the people while the children look on, learning the traditions and culture of the Eskimo ways. Throughout the villages, an aboriginal subsistence whaling system has been put in place with limitations set on the number of Bowhead Whales that can be harpooned and butchered every year.
