Towering above the Inupiat village of Kaktovik on Barter Island in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, are the beautiful snow covered peaks of the Romanzof Mountains. These peaks rise to a height of 5,846 feet and when people attempt to climb this mountain range, the closest and only village throughout the refuge is Kaktovik.
In the village of of Kaktovik, there are approximately 210 permanent residents, many of these people have had families living here for centuries, most of them being Inupiat Eskimos. In the early 1890's and 1900's, Barter Island was where commercial whalers would stop but it was not until 1923 that any signs of a permanent settlement was seen here.
