The small Inupiat village of Kaktovik is situated on the north coastal shores of Barter Island in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge with a population of approximately 300. An aerial view of Kaktovik shows the buildings built along the edge of the Arctic Coastal Plain which covers an area of 1.0 square miles, 0.2 square miles being water.
The village is very isolated and the people have followed in their culture and traditions relating to the Inupiat Eskimos. The people still partake in subsistence hunting of the caribou, Bowhead Whales, walruses and seals to support their way of life.
Although this aerial picture shows signs of a beautiful day in the village of Kaktovik, winters often span for 9 months to temperatures of 50 below and summers only reach highs of 45 degrees farenheit. People once resided in sod houses trying to fight off fierce winter storms, but now, the village of Kaktovik is fortunate enough to have plumbing, motorboats, snow machines and modernized homes.
