Clouds fill the sky over the uninhabited island of Kahoolawe as the sunset lighting filters through creating beautiful scenery from the shores of Makena Beach in Maui, Hawaii. Kahoolawe is the smallest of 8 volcanic islands situated around Hawaii and is offshore approximately 7 miles from Maui.

Kahoolawe has always been sparsely populated as there is very little fresh water and it was once used as a training area and bombing location by the US military. After 1990, the training ended on Kahoolawe and the State of Hawaii took over ownership in 1994 turning the island into a reserve which is now used only for native Hawaiian culture, spiritual and subsistence reasons.

No one resides on Kahoolawe Island but while visiting Maui, one can enjoy the stunning sunsets which highlight the island from Makena Beach. The waves lap up onto the golden sandy beach, an amazing place to relax and watch the sunset hues take over the sky.

Makena Beach on Maui, Hawaii is split into two which also go by the names of Big Beach and Little Beach. Little Beach seems to be the busiest and many return to Big Beach to watch the sunset but both areas can bring in some huge waves and visitors should be on alert when swimming here.
