A juvenile Summer Tanager showing off its beautiful colors where it is perched in a tree in Texas Hill Country in Comfort, Texas in the USA. When this juvenile reaches maturity, it will be approximately 6.75 inches in length with the adult female having orange-yellow underparts, dark cheeks, an olive back, gray tinged wings and tail.
The male species has a bright red plumage with the underparts being the brightest and a display of dark colored cheeks and a dark bill. More commonly seen flying high in the trees where they forage trying to catch insects in flight. The most common type of food for the Summer Tanager is insects, bees, wasps and berries and after catching the live insects, they may be seen beating it against a branch to kill it before eating it.
When this juvenile reaches its breeding age, it will be found in deciduous forests where it builds its nest of dried grasses and other types of vegetation. They usually make their home amongst a cluster of leaves or in the fork of branches, many which are hanging over a road or other type of opening.
