In the downtown area of Fairbanks, Alaska along Cushman Street, is a historical building home to the Immaculate Conception Church, one of the oldest buildings in Fairbanks. As of April 3, 1976, the church was listed on the Registrar of Historical Sites and has become a very popular tourist attraction.
When Fairbanks was a trading post, many of the local residents and prospectors were catholic and two priests joined forces to gather funds for the church. Built in 1904 by Father Francis Monroe, S.J., the Immaculate Conception Church was first located at Dunkel Street near Front Street and was used as a church, a library and a reading room.
A hospital was built across the river making it hard for the priests to reach the sick and it was decided that the church should be moved to its current location in downtown Fairbanks. This took place in 1911 and was a massive task for the Father and workers. Additions and renovations continued through the years until it was declared as a historical monument and a complete face lift and paint job was in order.
Today, services are still held in the Immaculate Conception Church along with gatherings such as weddings and special church affairs. During the summer months, the grounds are adorned in an array of blossoming flowers.
