Sunrise starts to illuminate the frozen landscape of the Yukon River in Alaska, USA near a checkpoint in Anvik, Alaska during the 2005 Iditarod race. At first light, a sled dog team and its musher continue across the Yukon River fighting the cold winter temperatures.

Anvik, Alaska is one of 25 checkpoints along the route of the Iditarod, a small city with a population of a little over 100. The Yukon River is the longest river found throughout Alaska and Anvik is the first checkpoint on the Yukon.

There are anywhere between 55-75 mushers at the start of the Iditarod race and each one is required to make at least three rest stops on route. The first one must be a 24 hour stop taken at any checkpoint they want, usually within the 300-600 miles mark into the race. The second must be a 8 hour stop somewhere along the Yukon River and the third stop must be made for 8 hours at White Mountain. From this last checkpoint, the end of the Iditarod race is only 77 miles away.

A beautiful sunrise in Alaska, USA during the Iditarod race is a welcoming sight for the mushers and the sled dog teams. Thin wisps of clouds are highlighted as the sun begins to rise across the horizon.
