A tedious and lengthy job, but well worth the effort, is harvesting mussels which taste incredible when they are fried, steamed, baked, breaded or mixed into a seafood recipe. Two women scour the beach at Kachemak Bay near Homer, Alaska where they spend their time harvesting mussels.
There are tools which can be used for harvesting mussels, but these two women do it with their bare hands. At low tide, they must pick each of the mussels off the rocks, ensuring they are big enough to be cooked and avoiding ones which have been exposed to the air and sun for a long time period.
When cooked, mussels are an excellent source of protein, filled with vitamins and minerals but after being harvested, they should be prepared as soon as possible as they do not keep well.
