Harpooned Bowhead Whale Coastal Sunset Kaktovik Alaska

As the sunset hues highlight the sky, a couple of men begin to butcher a recently harpooned Bowhead Whale where it is laid to rest on the coastal shores in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, USA.

The sky is an array of beautiful colors at sunset over the Arctic Ocean, but the sight along the coastal shores of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska is not such a pretty one. Here lies a Bowhead Whale which has recently been harpooned by the people from the village of Kaktovik.

The Inupiat people from the village and surrounding areas still partake in whaling as they believe this is a part of their culture which should be carried on. An annual set limit of Bowhead Whales has been put in place which is part of the aboriginal subsistence whaling system.

Before darkness sets in and the sunset hues still highlight the sky, an Inupiat man from Kaktovik makes the first cut into the blubber on a 45 foot Bowhead Whale.
