A female Hairy Woodpecker keeps her eyes peeled for any signs of danger which will put her young at risk in the wilderness of Anchorage, Alaska. The young woodpecker remains hidden in the hole of a tree trunk where they build their nest at least 4 to 60 meters off the ground in forested areas or orchards.
After the young Hairy Woodpecker is between 28 to 30 days old, it will be ready to leave its nest and take flight on its own. These intriguing bird species will feed on insects, caterpillars and the chrysalids which are their favorite food, as well as ants, grasshoppers, beetles, crickets, flies and spiders. Occasionally they will be seen eating nuts, seeds and a few types of fruit.
Both genders of the Hairy Woodpecker have black and white checkered markings on their wings, white outer tail feathers, a black crown, black eye mask and nape of the neck and a white colored chest, abdomen, back and rump. The males have a red patch on the back of their head which the female Hairy Woodpeckers do not have. The Hairy Woodpeckers grow to about 9.75 inches in length with a wingspan of 15 inches.
