Feeding time for the Great Blue Heron is done during the night and day but they are more active around the early hours at dawn or later at dusk. Using its long spear bill in shallow water, this bird was captured while seeking out its food in Alum Creek in Yellowstone National Park.
The Great Blue Heron prefers fish as a meal but they will also feast on frogs, salamanders, lizards, snakes, birds, shrimp, crab, dragonflies, grasshoppers and a variety of insects. Watching a Great Blue Heron feeding is very intriguing as they have perfected this skill since their were approximately two months old after leaving their nest.
These birds are the largest herons in North America and when fully mature, they stand about 60 centimeters tall and up to 137 centimeters in length. The long bill on the Great Blue Heron is a very prominent feature on this bird along with its legs and neck.
