At the Tok Cutoff along the Glenn Highway in Alaska, USA, the scenery is beautiful in the summer as it overlooks the landscape of Wrangell St. Elias National Park which flourishes in greenery as the Wrangell Mountains rise above in the backdrop. The sky is highlighted in pink hues as white clouds scatter themselves and slowly float by.
The Glenn Highway in Alaska, USA is about 187 miles in length but with the Tok Cutoff being recognized as part of this highway, the entire length of the highway spans a distance of approximately 328 miles. The Tok Cutoff stretches 125 miles and connects the Alaska Highway and the Richardson Highway with the mileage beginning as one turns onto the Glenn Highway at Tok.
Built in the 1940's and 1950's, the Tok Cutoff was made to connect Tok in a more direct route to the Richardson Highway. It also made traveling shorter for those wanting to reach Valdez and Anchorage.
The entire Glenn Highway is paved with fairly moderate grades and at the Tok Cut-off the road parallels the Wrangell and Mentasta mountain ranges. Surrounded by the Matanuska Valley, this wilderness region of Alaska is home to bear, moose, caribou and dall sheep. The scenery of Wrangell St. Elias National Park is beautiful from the viewpoints when traveling the Glenn Highway.
