A prominent feature in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley near Palmer, Alaska in the Chugach Mountains, is the beauty of Pioneer Peak. This mountain towers to 6,398 feet, receiving its name in 1939 to honor the pioneers in the farming industry during the 1930's around the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.
The sun glistens off the peak which is still blanketed in snow and towers over an old farm barn located on the farming landscape below. Palmer, Alaska began as a railway station in 1916 but in 1935, over 200 families arrived in the valley and the farming industry began. Many farms failed but many survived and generations later, they still have some of the working farms in Palmer, Alaska.
Pioneer Peak is a well known hiking location where steep trails head up towards the summit at the eastern shoulder. Many lives have been claimed on this mountain as the climb to the peak is overly steep and many have had to rope up on the last part between the cliffs.
A round trip is about 12 miles long with the best months being from June through to September. When reaching the summit, the view overlooking the farms of Palmer and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley is breathtaking.
