An insect native to two thirds of the United States, this close up picture of an Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly on a flowering plant was taken in Texas Hill Country in Comfort, Texas. With its transparent wings and brown shaded body, the Eastern Pondhawk will feed on small flying insects while the nymphs prey on aquatic invertebrates using the plants as a resting area.
From the flowering plant, on the ground or on low perches around ponds, the Eastern Pondhawk can hunt out their prey. Sometimes the prey is as large as the dragonfly itself which they hold onto with the large spines located on their thighs.
Growing to a size of 36-48 mm, the dragonfly resides in Eastern North America, the Great Plains, south to Texas and in certain areas of Arizona and New Mexico.
