The town of Healy in Alaska, USA is located along the Nenana River where a variety of beautiful flowers blossom. This picture has a Dwarf Dogwood in blossom with a Spotted Ladyslipper wilting and nearing the end of its flowering stage.
The Dwarf Dogwood is a very common type of plant with evergreen leaves growing in a ring shape of 4-6. A cluster mixed in greens, purples and white decorates the center of the flower as 4 large white petals extend beneath.
After the pink to reddish blotched colored petals on the Spotted Ladyslipper have bloomed, usually in June and July in Healy, Alaska, the petals start to wilt, eventually dropping off. The plant grows to around 30 centimeters in height and the lip edges on the flower are polished in order to send insects sliding to the bottom of the pouch. The insects can climb the hairs at the back of the pouch to get out, but on their way they will touch the stigma and anther, creating a successful pollination.
Alaska, Healy Dwarf Dogwood (Cornus canadensis) and Spotted Ladyslipper (Cypripedium guttatum).
