The winter nights are bitterly cold while the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in Alaska is taking place and this dog musher warms up by a water heater at the Takotna checkpoint. These heaters are checked regularly to avoid the fire dying out as the reheating can take up to 20 minutes after the fire has been burning at a steady pace.

Many of the dog mushers call this checkpoint the Iditarod Spa as a married couple bakes up fresh pies and good meals for the racers and the dogs are taken care which means more rest for the dogs and the mushers.

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is a competitive event like no other where dog mushers and their teams race over 1150 miles of some of Alaska's roughest terrain. The temperature is well below zero and the winds can be unbelievably cold as these competitors start from Anchorage and end in Nome, Alaska, an adventure which is completed between 10 and 17 days.
