Two House finches perch on a branch in Texas Hill Country near Comfort, Texas in the USA but the yellow and black one becomes quite defensive while trying to guard its feeding site. Their primary source of food is grains, seeds and berries with their favorite being nettle and dandelion.
Most of the adult House Finches have a brown plumage with some gray on their wing feathers but many of the males have a reddish hue to their heads, necks and shoulders. The coloration can vary with the changing seasons and the berries the finches have been eating. In rare cases, the House Finch can have a yellow or bright orange coloring but they all can become very defensive when keeping others away from their feeding grounds.
House finches are common visitors to parks, backyards, urban centers, farms and forest edges as well as in deserts, grasslands, chaparrals and open woods in the western part of the United States. The average size for these finches is about 14 centimeters in length and between 19 to 22 grams in weight with the females being slightly shorter. An active type of bird during the daylight hours who use vocalization and visual cues to communicate amongst themselves.
