As the sun dips below the peaks of Primrose Ridge in Denali National Park, Alaska in the USA, it leaves the sky aglow in beautiful sunset colors. On top of Primose Ridge, the silhouette of a Dall Sheep is clearly defined, a location often visited by the sheep who reside in Denali National Park.
Dall Sheep are found in these rugged mountains where they prefer to stay on the higher ridges to avoid their enemies, one of the main ones being wolves. A male Dall Sheep, like this one silhouetted in the sunset lighting, has large, flaring, curled horns. This makes it easy to distinguish between the two sexes as female Dall Sheep have small, slender horns.
Primrose Ridge is made up of low tundra, brush, wildflowers and rolling hills which rise 1,500 feet above the road into the park. From the ridge, at the sheep viewing area, there is an excellent view of the Savage/Sanctuary Basin, Denali and a large part of the Alaska Range. Many visitors to Alaska, journey to Primrose Ridge in Denali National Park for a day hike, often staying overnight to watch the colors of the sunset explode across the sky.
