Traveling over the rocky ledges in Yellowstone National Park, a mother coyote carries her pup in her mouth who weighed about 250 grams at birth. If the mother fears there is any danger near the den, the female will carry her pups in her mouth one by one to their new location.
A female coyote has a gestation period of 60-63 days and has a litter of anywhere between 1 to 19 pups with the average number being 6. The eyes on the pup will open after about 10 days and the ears will become erect and they will leave their den after about 3-4 weeks.
Around 35 days, the coyote pup will be fully weaned and will usually stay with its mother to form the foundation of a pack. The mother is very protective over her pups and will stay very close to them until they are old enough to fend for themselves.
The coloring on a coyote varies, but a majority of the adults have a gray fur coat with white markings under their bellies. Their legs are slightly red in color and grow to a weight of about 30-40 pounds.
Coyotes are found almost anywhere in Yellowstone National Park with the favorite spots being Madison, Firehole, Gibbon Rivers, Lamar Valley and the Hayden Valley.
