Spanning the Copper River in Cordova, Alaska is the historic Million Dollar Bridge located in the midst of the wilderness of the Chugach National Forest. Mountain peaks, still blanketed in snow, rise above the Million Dollar Bridge which was erected in 1908.
The Copper River Highway, which is a gravel road winding through the wilderness of the forest, leads to the Million Dollar Bridge. The bridge was used as a railway crossing up until 1938 but reconstructed in 1958 for the use of vehicles. The year of 1964 brought the Good Friday earthquake which destroyed one span of the Million Dollar Bridge and washed it into the Copper River.
It took millions of dollars and years of repairs, eventually being completed in 2005, to mend the bridge and making it safe to be used again by vehicles. The name of the bridge was given as the original cost was 1.4 million dollars, but all that was easily recovered by the $200 million dollars worth of copper ore shipped during its construction.
Today, the Million Dollar Bridge has been a major tourist attraction for those traveling through Cordova, Alaska with an information kiosk near by explaining the entire history of the bridge.
