While driving along the Copper River Highway through the Chugach National Forest in Cordova, Alaska, the scenery is brilliant as the snow covered mountain peaks tower over the trees and the wildflowers blossom on the sides of the road. The Copper River Highway extends for 56.4 miles and is fairly isolated with about 44 miles being dirt/gravel and the remaining 12 being paved.
The construction of the highway began in 1945 and when reaching the end, the road becomes very primitive and is only suitable for four-wheel drives eventually ending up at the Allen River. This highway was originally supposed to connect Cordova, Alaska with the highway at Chitinia, but the Million Dollar Bridge road was used instead, leaving the Copper River Highway as one of the discontinued roads of the Alaska Route 10.
The wildflowers are known as lupines and can grow to be about 5 feet tall which decorate the wilderness highway in purple hues when they are in bloom. Growing very close to the edge of the highway, the wildflowers are easily swayed when cars pass by.
