The diamond tower designed structure of the Cooper River Bridge/Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina in the USA, is a single cable-stay bridge which hangs from two towers, one at each end of the bridge. Each tower reaches a height of 575 feet holding up this 1,546 foot long bridge which is suspended by 128 individual cables between each of the supports.
Each cable is strong enough to hold over one million pounds and are made up of 6 wires twisted around a main center cable. The eight lane bridge connects Charleston to Mount Pleasant and is the longest of the cable-stay bridges in the Western Hemisphere.
The opening of the Cooper River Bridge which spans the Cooper River in Charleston, South Carolina took place on July 16th, 2005. Before the official opening date, there were celebrations all week which included an orchestra, cocktails and food for a black tie affair to ensure this mark in history was acknowledged.
