A Common Goldeneye spends his time swimming in a pond in Yellowstone National Park, giving us a close look at his golden-yellow eye which is how this species of bird got its name. As this male swims through the ripples in the pond, we can see the distinct markings on his plumage.

Male Common Goldeneye birds have a dark head with a tinge of green to it, a white patch running alongside its beak, a dark back to match its head and a snow white colored neck and front. The female bird is much duller in color with a brown head and a body which is mostly grey.

A full grown adult male Common Goldeneye will grow to be between 18 and 21 inches and weigh somewhere between 1.9 to 3.1 pounds. The females are considerably smaller in size and length.
