Columbia Glacier Prince William Sound Alaska State Ferry Route

The Columbia Glacier flows down into Columbia Bay in Prince William Sound, Alaska and is a very impressive sight while on route aboard the Alaska State Ferry.

While traveling aboard the Alaska State Ferry in Prince William Sound, Alaska, the picturesque views of the Columbia Glacier, Columbia Bay and the snow covered mountain peaks are breathtaking in the sunlight. Each route aboard the Alaska State Ferry offers some of the most spectacular natural scenery, an abundance of wildlife and a history lesson on the area traveled.

The Columbia Glacier is one of the fastest moving glaciers in the world which began its retreat in the 1980's. The terminus of the Columbia Glacier is approximately 2 kilometers wide and covers an area of about 1,000 square kilometers. The length of the glacier is about 51 kilometers with about 15 kilometers laying on bedrock in the Columbia Bay below the surface.

The Southwest Alaska route aboard the Alaska State Ferry takes passengers from Prince William Sound to Kodiak Island where the glacial landscape is breathtaking.
