Purple, pink, orange and yellow hues fill the sky during a colorful sunset as the silhouette of a tree stands alone in a field. The tree branches are thick near the top of the tree blocking out the purple shades in the sky, but as you work your way down the tree, the pink and yellow colors sneak through the thinner areas.
From the base of the tree, the picture shows the sky as a line of dark orange which then blends into the yellow hues, changing to pink and finally the sky darkens into a deep purple shade. Reasons behind a colorful sunset are created from an effect called Rayleigh scattering. When the sun is directly overhead, the light has a short distance to pass through the thick atmosphere creating the blue coloring, but at sunset, the sun is closer to the horizon and the light must travel farther through the atmosphere.
