There are many common names for this type of flower but many know it as the Chocolate Lily due to its coloring. The blossom on the Chocolate Lily shows its beautiful petals and yellow centers during June and July when it blooms in the damp wilderness of the open fields near Eklutna, Alaska.
When in bloom, this flower is one that does not have a pretty scent to it, but carries one of its own which is very distinguishable and unpleasant. The plant grows to a height of 5 to 18 inches depending on where it is found and starts out from white bulblets. It flourishes from the bulb with 1-3 whorls of 5-11 lance shaped leaves and then is topped off with a bowl-shaped flower having six petals.
The Chocolate Lily does not fear the dark clouds lingering overhead as it prefers dampness over the dry, hot days. There are only two brown flowers found throughout Alaska with the Chocolate Lily being one and the other called the Marsh Five Finger.
Chocolate Lily (Fritillaria camschatcencis) cluster in early June near Eklutna, Alaska.
