A short distance from Cordova, Alaska, people can explore the natural beauty of Child's Glacier and the Copper River in the Chugach National Forest. On this particular day, the scenery becomes grayer in color as dark storm clouds move in over the glacial landscape, leaving the verdant landscape open to whatever Mother Nature has ordered.
The ice walls of the Child's Glacier can reach 300 feet in height which border the banks of the Copper River. As the glacier calves, large icebergs break away and create an incredible show for tourists to the area, often sending 10 foot waves across the river to the other bank.
The best time to witness Child's Glacier calving is around May through to September, but visitors should be warned that the weather can change suddenly. Clouds quickly move in and the promise of a storm is very real.
