During the summer months, the Buffalo or Bison has a light weight coat of brown fur and as fall and winter begin to approach, the coat becomes long and shaggy to protect it through the cold months. While touring Yellowstone National Park, a buffalo is captured walking alone in the long, dry grasses of a field in the wilderness of the park.
Growing to be about 6.6 feet tall, 10 feet long and weighing between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds depending on the gender, the buffalo/bison is the largest land mammal found throughout North America. They have lived on a continuous basis in Yellowstone National Park since prehistoric times and today they still have the largest bison population in the country, about 2300 to 4500, which reside on public land.
The bison feeds mainly on grasses and sedges like those found in this field in the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park. While visiting this national park, the chances of seeing one of this massive animals is a very real possibility.
