A spectacular behavior performed by a Humpback Whale is the breach and this whale in Frederick Sound in Tongass National Forest in Alaska, USA displays his entire body, except for the tail, while breaching. Breaching is believed to be a form of communication and is one of the most powerful actions a Humpback Whale can do.
When this massive marine mammal lands on the surface of the water after breaching, the splash is magnificent and the sound can be heard echoing across Frederick Sound. The humpback grows to be about 39-52 feet in length and weighing about 79,000 pounds, but when breaching, they make it seem easy to get their huge bodies out of the water.
The Humpback is a baleen whale and is one which is seen most often along the southern coast of Alaska, USA especially around Frederick Sound. They are found throughout the oceans around the world as they follow their migration routes traveling to temperate or tropical waters to have their calves. As Spring arrives, the Humpback Whales migrate back to Alaska as the food is plentiful bringing with them their new additions.
